Water Filtration Media

Sand filtration is a frequently used technology for water purification. The filter media typically comprises a multiple layer of sands having a range of grain sizes. When water flows through the filter, the suspended solids are removed and clean water flows out. The flow-direction may be reversed in order to regenerate the filter bed, so called backwashing.

Silica sands and gravels for water filtration:

Minerals Marketing offer a range of Silica Sands and Gravels for use in water filtration applications. Standard grades include 40mm, 20mm, 10mm, 6mm, 2.0-3.35mm (5/8), 1.0-2.0mm (8/16), 0.8.1.2mm (14/25), 0.5-1.0mm (16/30).

Silica sand and gravel provides a cost effective, grain size controlled, filter bed media.

Glass media for water filtration:

Alternatively, one of the most rapidly growing areas is the use of Glass Media for water filtration, whereby the benefits of using glass for water filtration include the following:

  • Tests show that glass media removes finer particles from water than the equivalent grade of silica sand.
  • Having lower density than sand, glass media requires 15% less material to fill the equivalent filter vessel.
  • The angular to sub-angular particle shape of glass media typically provides improvement in turbidity removal over sub-rounded silica sands.
  • With superior permeability due to particle packing, back washes take less time, saving energy, chemical treatment and water usage costs.
  • Glass media is less prone to fouling due to a smoother surface, whereby bacteria cannot get trapped in any cracks or crevasses, which in turn results in lower process costs.

Minerals Marketing supply a range of glass media and silica sand media to suite your application requirements. Material data sheets are available on request.
